Making a Bleach Spray Shirt
For this shirt, I want to keep the sunset pieces on the backing and remove everything else. Fold and wrap the shirt sleeves and any excess fabric around to the back side of the cardboard. Cover everything with a sheet of paper and use the scraper tool to make sure that the vinyl is firmly adhered to the shirt. I usually let it dry for just a little bit, maybe 10 minutes or so, after dabbing the excess bleach off.

Mix this up before you begin your bleaching project so it is ready to use. You can mix the solution in a plastic tub, kitchen sink, or washer. Wash the shirt separately in cold water with a small amount of mild detergent to remove any remaining bleach residue. Use a sheet of transfer tape to transfter the design onto a clean, dry shirt.

For this example, I am using our Grow Positive Thoughts SVG. For best results, the ideal type of images to use for bleach-stenciled shirts are ones that have medium-sized text and image detail. Once you have selected and imported your design, resize the image as needed to fit your shirt. I’m making an adult-size small shirt, so my design is 9 inches wide. If it’s not bleached enough after a few minutes, do another gentle spray, blot it up, and wait again. First, wear rubber gloves and mix a solution of 3/4 cup chlorine bleach per gallon of water. Submerge the fabric in the solution and agitate occasionally. Allow the material to soak for five to seven minutes, checking the color to see when it is to your liking. Pour off the bleach/water solution and immediately transfer the fabric to the neutralizing solution. Submerge the fabric in the neutralizing solution for ten minutes.
Always make sure to wear gloves and eye protection when working with bleach, as it can be a strong irritant. I recently had a piece that I used that exact technique on fall apart when I washed it. I applied too much cleaner bleach and left it on too long. Lay your design flat on the ground, far away from other objects that might possible catch any overspray. Test out your spray on some old fabric to see what kind of look you get.

Drain the neutralizing solution and wash the fabric as usual. It can also be used to create unique designs and change the look of colored fabrics. But what if you only want to lighten the color a bit? Prepare a neutralizing solution that stops the bleaching action when you reach the desired color.
You may even be able to hide the accidental bleach splash by incorporating it into the final design. If you’re using vinyl, transfer it to your shirt with transfer tape. Press down well with your fingers, and carefully remove the transfer tape — you’ll need to go slow, as the vinyl is not going to want to stick well to the T-shirt. After you remove the transfer tape, press down again along the edges of your vinyl to make sure it is stuck to the shirt as good as can be. Before you bleach shirts, first wash and dry your T-shirt.
Hang it up to dry, and then you can wash and dry the shirt as usual without fear of ruining the design. You may want to wash it by itself once, just to be sure you don’t accidentally bleach any other clothes. Try this technique to remove or soften the color if you have a pair of cotton slacks, a cotton blouse, or some cotton fabric that you would like to have a shade or so lighter. Clothing that is a blend of yarns like polyester and cotton may have a heathered look after bleaching since each type of fiber will release the dye differently. When the shirt has lightened, place the shirt into the bleach neutralizer, remove the vinyl, and allow it to soak for about 5 minutes before rinsing under hot running water.
Transfer to the neutralizing solution and allow to soak for 10 minutes. Making designs with bleach is super fun and it’s a great way to show your sense of style and personality. If you’d like to add some pizzazz to your clothes, you can use freezer paper to make a stencil and create an intricate design. Or, you can use a tie-dye method with bleach instead of dye to make interesting, eye-catching patterns. It’s so much fun to try different bleach shirt designs and decorations.
If you’re using a freezer paper stencil, place it shiny side down on the shirt and iron it. You’ll want your EasyPress at 310°F or your household iron at medium-high temperature—press for about 10 seconds. What you’re doing is causing the plastic on the freezer paper to adhere to the t-shirt.
To spray bleach an area of non-white fabric, fill a spray bottle with bleach and water solution (50% water and 50% bleach). You may only need 5 minutes; do not leave it longer than 20 minutes. Have the neutralizing solution ready to stop the bleaching process. You can even place stencils before spraying to create a unique design. This is super easy to do with watered down liquid bleach in a spray bottle.
There are many different types of spray bottles that you can use for your bleaching solution. For the techniques in this post, I recommend using a continuous-mist spray bottle and a spray bottle that has both a stream and spray nozzle. You’ll be super gratified because you’ll already be able to see your design appearing on the shirt. Be sure to leave the cardboard inside the t-shirt, as it will protect the back from bleed over. Bring your prepared shirt with the stencil attached, your paper towels, and your bleach spray with you. I recommend mixing the bleach with an equal part of water when prepping for this bleach shirt project.
